What’s the story on a wine Decanter?
A decanter is a useful wine accessory that will often double as a beautiful piece of art on your dining or side table. When a young (usually red) wine is poured into a decanter, it can accomplish several positives; helping it to “breathe”, softening harsh or gritty tannins, and bringing out subtle flavours and aromas. In an older or unfiltered wine the same benefits of decanting are apparent, plus the decanter helps to remove sediment that forms naturally over time in the bottle.
To decant, pour the wine slowly from the opened bottle into the mouth of the decanter. Be careful not to allow sediment from the bottle enter the decanter. You can also use a light source (traditionally a candle) positioned under the neck of the bottle to help spot sediment as it reaches the bottle neck. A small amount of wine and the sediment will be left in the bottle when you are finished. A decanting funnel is also a useful tool for catching sediment as the wine is poured into the decanter; some models splay the wine as it falls into the decanter, assisting the process.

Metrokane V1 Vacuum Decanter
