Opening Sparkling Wine

Opening sparkling wine can be a fun way to liven a party or get acquainted with some new friends! However, the old days of pushing a cork out of a bottle with your thumbs can become a bit of a safety concern if not done correctly. Here's an easy process that can make the evening much less hazardous and make you look very sauve in the process!

How to open a bottle of Champagne or Sparkling Wine
  1. Chill the bottle in the fridge or in ice-water.
  2. Remove the foil from the top of the bottle.
  3. Point the mouth of the bottle away from you (and anything/anyone you value!); carefully and slowly remove the wire cage from the cork. It is recommended that you keep a firm thumb on the cork after the wire is removed.
  4. While still holding the bottle away from you and others, place a clean towel over the top of the bottle and firmly hold the cork through the towel.
  5. With your other hand, grasp the bottom of the bottle and turn it slowly. (Note: the wine is under pressure, so you want to loosen the cork by slowly turning the bottle while maintaining control of the cork).
  6. You will hear a slight "pop" or "hiss" when the cork is removed.
  7. Pour into frozen Champagne flutes and enjoy!

If you wish to re-seal the bottle for later, use only a stopper specially made for Champagne/Sparkling Wine.
